What to Do on Losing Phone?

Hey! readers... Here comes my first post on this blog. Hope you guys love it.  Recently, I lost my phone and faced a few problems in order to recover it. So, this post will be containing my experience and the necessary steps you should take in order to recover your phone.

1)  First of all as you get to know that you lost your phone, just don't start panicking as it can make your bad day worse. Keep calm. Try to figure out whether you dropped it somewhere or its been stolen.

2) Call on your lost phone number from any other phone. If it's not switched Off, i'd say it's your luckiest day. Keep trying if it isn't answered by anyone. You can send message to  your lost phone stating all the details required by someone in order to return it back to you (Well, it will work only if you haven't setted up any kind of lock on your phone).

Those reader's who haven't lost their phone, must set up details to contact you in any other way, on your lock screen, Check out settings on your phone.

Lost phone. So sad!!

3) Let's see what shall be done if lost phone is switched off..

Get a device with internet connection as soon as you can.

  • If the lost phone is android ...

  1. Install Google Android Device Manager from the play store. This is a free app and requires you to just link your registered Gmail ID from the device. It can help you locate your device, re-set the lock screen PIN and also wipe all data, if required. The only issue with this app is that it requires a data connection device and GPS to be activated.
  2. Avast! Mobile Security: This is basically a free anti-virus app with additional features like anti-theft and privacy advisor. Its features like anti-virus and anti-theft can be made made invisible(stealth mode), thus providing an additional level of security. It allows us to use remote options (via web or text messages) to locate our handset.
  3. Plan B: It can be installed on the phone even if it is lost or stolen. All we need to do is access the Android Play Store from a PC and install the app on lost device. Once Plan B locates your mobile, it sends an e-mail with location information of the device to your registered Gmail ID.

  • If the lost phone is iPhone ...

  1. Life is much easier for an iPhone user. Just login to your iCloud account and the device will be traceable from here, if you have enabled the 'Find My iPhone' service.

  • If the lost phone is Samsung ...

  1. Samsung users may also use samsung account apart from Android Device Manager, if 'Find My Device' service is enabled on lost phone.

  • If the lost phone is Windows Phone ...

  1. 'Find My Phone' software helps to locate, lock or wipe data from windows mobile device. For more info visit https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/11585/windows-phone-find-a-lost-phone

  • Retrieving a lost mobile phone using the IMEI number may not work all the time. One, the process to track the IMEI is not simple. Second, thieves may easily change IMEI number. Most of the thieves immediately take out the SIM and throw it away and then sell it to their regular buyer including, but not limited to, a pawn shop owner for very less amount of money.

4) Now comes the difficult part. Get a photo copy of phone's sale invoice and any other thing you think might help police to recover it easily. Yes, you've got it right again, you have to lodge a FIR to the nearest Police Station, from the location you lost your device. Well, as i told you before that it's a difficult part, so let's know why is it actually a difficult task. "Police has lots of work to do, if police will be searching your phone on the streets who will solve the criminal cases" this is what a Constable told me when i was at police station to file FIR about my lost phone. Then he gave me a form stating lost mobile phone. Its unfortunate that most of the police stations doesn't record FIR; instead they may hand us over a copy of a MIR (Missing Report). I filled it, he signed it with police seal. I got a photo copy of that lost/found form and i was told to claim for Insurance and also that if they will get any information regarding my lost phone, they will contact me. I returned home. It was a bad experience. It was my first time i visited police station.
Police won't file FIR for lost phone, because if they will file it, they will have to take action over it within no time.
WTF? MIR is not accepted by the Insurers.
Note: This happens in almost all the places in India. Not sure about other countries.

5) If the same happens with you too, just register your lost phone on sites like 3gadgets.com . Many other sites are also out there.

This picture shows a pile of sims
6) Go to your service provider store, get a new sim with your old number.

7) Police actions are a long-drawn process and also there is no guarantee of finding the lost object , so go, get a new phone.
